The United Kingdom, with Germany and France, is economically one of the most important EU mem-
ber states. The majority of European works councils have members from the UK and more than 18%
of all EWCs are subject to UK legislation, including many non-European companies.
Programme
The British system of employee representation is fundamentally different from many continental Euro-
pean systems. Works councils are relatively unknown in the mother country of the industrial revolution,
codetermination does not exist and the law is not prescriptive resulting in an absence of clear legal
rules. These issues, as well as the variations of EWC models, will be discussed for two days in a di-
rect exchange between continental European and British employee representatives.
